Palam Rural Centre (People’s Association for Leather and Allied Manufacturing) offers employment opportunities to people of the marginalized Harijan community in a village in Tamil Nadu region, southeastern India. In the Tamil language, Palam also means "bridge." Palam Rural Centre seeks to build a "bridge" to the markets of the rest of the world. With money from product sales, Palam has purchased land and homes for artisans (ownership traditionally unavailable to lower castes) and built a school for artisans’ children. Other artisan benefits include health care and retirement pensions. Palam artisans see education of their children as the key to hope and change. Through this work, Palam Rural Centre is providing dignity and security to artisans and helping to break down caste walls in society.

Each sculpture is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Artisans follow traditional methods passed down through the ages, working with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chunks, which are then carved using small hand tools into beautiful artwork!

Please do not wash in a regular washer and dryer, dry clean only. Always iron on the back side of the tapestry and never on the front side with the letters.

Print will come folded for shipping; creases are normal and will fade over time when hanging. To decrease the appearance of the creases quickly, place the canvas print side down on an ironing table and place pillow case over the canvas print then you can iron over the creases. Avoid high levels of heat and keeping the iron in one place for too long. Brush over the creases with the iron and do not firmly press.
