Meet Kanika

If you met Kanika today, you’d see a hardworking single mother with hope and a future—but her outlook wasn’t always so bright. Kanika and her family were just getting by when her husband passed away. Left with little to her name and no workable skill, Kanika found herself on her own to provide for her special needs son. Her desperation took a turn when she connected with MADE FREE in Indian village, where she works as a crafter today. She used to feel alone in her struggle. Now, she has a community. Through this support and the skills she’s acquired, Kanika not only provides beautiful goods for the MADE FREE community—she provides for her family. And her hope doesn’t end here. Do Good Shop founder Jenni has the pleasure of meeting Zellipah and her family when she was one of the keynote speakers at the annual Fair Trade Federation Conference.  Miss Zellipah shared that she went from being a young woman vulnerable to poverty and exploitation, to an artisan herself, and eventually to the founder and owner of her own fair trade company!

Zellipah, began Gitzell FairTrade and showcased the artwork at both craft fairs and festivals. Zellipah continued working with artisans from several African countries and supporting over 220 families. The increasing sales at the craft fairs and festivals eventually led her to begin selling wholesale to US shops.

These Giving Angels combine the beauty of our handmade, upcycled ceramic Angels with gorgeous banana paper from Haiti and a sentiment card. Made by an amazing jewelry team in Haiti, they make an encouraging gift for anyone!

Haiti’s Steel Drum art has been famous for decades throughout the world. Metal from recycled steel drums is cut, flattened, and put into a fire to be made malleable. Then the artisan traces the pattern onto the flat piece, and with chisel and hammer in hand, starts the tapping that cuts away all that is not the image. These particular pieces are made in the village of Croix des Bouquet, which has come to be known as the capital of metal art in Haiti!
