This beautiful nature themed ceramic luminary is handcrafted in a family workshop in the community of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. The intricate designs are etched by hand using a sharpened bicycle spoke.  Each luminary is created out of local clay, turned on a kick wheel, hand-painted, and wood-fired in a beehive-shaped kiln.  Read more about ceramicists Don Leopoldo Potosme and Sara here.  

Artisans receive business training and product development/design and no-interest micro-loans and direct grants for workshop capacity building. Our Sunita Shibori Caftans are made with soft 100% cotton material that is artistically hand tie dyed using the shibori tie dye technique. Women artisans in Western India do the shibori tie dye and the natural fiber material absorbs the colors beautifully.

Revenue earned through the wholesale and retail marketing of Sevya products is used to fund need-based development programs throughout India, under the auspices of the All India Movement for Seva.  Every purchase of a Sevya product directly benefits these artisan groups and enables them to pass their rich traditions on to the next generation. Each calming stone is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Artisans follow traditional methods passed down through the ages, working with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chunks, which are then carved using small hand tools into beautiful artwork!  

Tabaka Chigware Youths Self Help Group is one of our newest artisan partner groups who we began partnering with during the pandemic.  Each purchase you make provides more safe, living wage work for this wonderful community, in high need in this time of global crisis and recovery.

The Bunny Mug is hand–painted by artisans in the traditional ceramic village of Bat Trang, Vietnam, a village just outside of Hanoi that is known for its traditional ceramics. The piece is formed in a mold and then hand–painted with glaze. Bat Trang village was established in the 14th century to supply ceramics to the royal household. Pottery making is one of the most ancient traditions in Vietnam.
